KPW captures SSC Girls U19B championship

The King Philip Walpole Youth Hockey Girls U14 team, which also competes in the South Shore Conference Girls U19B short season division, captured the conference championship by beating the Seahawks White team, 3-1, Sunday in Brockton.

KPW went 13-1 and finished the regular season as the top seed, then knocked off No. 4 Franklin, 2-1, Saturday to earn a spot in the championship game. The second-seeded Seahawks White team, the only team to beat KPW during the season, advanced to the final after beating Cape Cod Canal, 2-1, in three overtimes Saturday.

KPW scored late in the first period and carried a 1-0 lead into the third period, but with 8:56 left in the game got called for a player covering the puck in the crease with her hand, resulting in a penalty shot and the Seahawks tied the game at 1.

KPW scored two goals late in the game, with 3:31 and 1:35 remaining, but got called for a penalty with 1:16 left. The Seahawks pulled their goalie and played 6-on-4 for the remainder of the game, but couldn’t score on the power play and KPW captured the championship.

KPW U18A captures South Shore Conference championship

The King Philip Walpole Youth Hockey Boys 18UA team played some of its best hockey during clutch time, capturing the South Shore Conference 18UA division championship by beating top-seeded Duxbury, 1-0, in overtime Sunday night.

KPW earned the third seed in the 18UA division, then earned a spot in the conference championship game by knocking off the second-seeded South Coast Panthers, 7-2, Saturday. Duxbury, which went 10-2 during the regular season, pulled off a 2-1 overtime win over Seahawks/Scituate Saturday to set up the title game against KPW.

Riding the strong defense it displayed all season — KPW's goals-against was third in the division during the regular season — KPW held Duxbury, the second-highest scoring team in the division, scoreless until poking the championship-winning goal in overtime.

KPW U18 White finishes 1-2 in state tournament

The District 3 runner-up King Philip Walpole Youth Hockey U18 White team went 1-2 in the Mass Hockey Tier III state tournament Nov. 15-17, with losses to two eventual semifinalists blocking its path to the state championship.

KPW had a long district run to earn a berth in the state tournament, starting with a 3-1 first-round win over Milton, then followed by a 3-0 win over the KPW U18 Blue team and a 4-1 win over Weymouth in the semifinals. KPW dropped a tight, 2-1, loss to eventual state champion Canton in the district championship game, but still advanced to the state tournament with an at-large selection.

KPW dropped a 5-2 loss to Parkway in its opening game, but rallied for a 2-1 win over Stoneham in the second game of pool play before dropping a 7-1 loss to Framingham in the third pool game.

Framingham fell to Canton in one semifinal and Parkway lost to Waltham in the other, before District 3 champion Canton won the state title by beating Waltham, 1-0.

KPW 10UB captures Falmouth Fall Classic

The King Philip Walpole Youth Hockey U10B team won the 2019 Falmouth Fall Classic Hockey Tournament

The King Philip Walpole Youth Hockey U10B team won the Falmouth Fall Classic Tournament Nov. 10 in Falmouth, beating the Connecticut Riverhawks twice to capture the tournament championship.

KPW scored in the game's final minute to open the tournament with a 2-1 win over the Connecticut Riverhawks, and then knocked off Westfield, 4-2, and host Falmouth, 4-2, to set up a title game rematch with the Riverhawks. With the championship on the line, KPW again skated to a 2-1 win, sealing the tournament trophy.
